The Compiler Himself Notifies Readers How Spiritual Man Is Referenced In Mary Baker Eddy's Writings

This message is concerned with how Mary
Baker Eddy explains the difference between
spiritual man and the mortal sense of being,
which must work up to the spiritual.

Spiritual man does not need to work out of anything. It
is the mortal and or human sense of being that
needs to work out of itself and is therefore
appropriate for use, and without condemnation.

However, neither God, nor God's perfect image
and likeness need to work out of anything lesser,
as God's infinite perfection is eternally
established, as is man's by his undeviating and
joyful reflection. Therefore "you", as defined
in the chapter "Glossary" of "Science and Health
With Key To The Scriptures" applies neither to
the infinite and divine Mind nor to man as Mind's
reflection.

Searching the printed Concordance to "Science and
Health With Key To The Scriptures", as well as to
Prose Works, pronouns in general are not given
at all with three exceptions, those referring
to God, those referring to Mary Baker Eddy, found
under Eddy, and one alone, that being "You",
as given in the chapter, Glossary, page 599:3,

"YOU. "As applied to corporeality, a mortal; finity."

It should be noted that Mrs. Eddy approved the
printed Concordance as left to us by Albert F. Conant,
the Compiler. This was not an oversight, but rather
a lesson in itself. It is important therefore that
because this is true, those able to retain what our
Leader left us, should do so! This is obedience and
how we honor and respect the Discoverer, Founder and
Leader of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy.

As regards the printed edition of
the Concordance to The Complete Writings of Mary
Baker Eddy, it is quite instructive and helpful
to consider what Albert F. Conant, the Compiler
writes in his several Prefaces. He had to update
the printed Concordance since he began in 1902,
and many revised editions of the textbook followed
that date.

In one of his Prefaces he writes,

"The plan of this Concordance to the WRITINGS of
MARY BAKER EDDY other than SCIENCE AND HEALTH,
follows in every detail the plan of the
Concordance to SCIENCE AND HEALTH, which was
compiled under the personal direction and
supervision of MRS. EDDY."

In the initial Preface to the textbook, Mr. Conant
states, regarding sub-titles,

"....all that the author of the Christian Science
textbook has said on any given subject will be found
grouped in one place. For example: the spiritual man
is often referred to as the "idea of God." More than
twenty references to this subject will be found in
the sub-title "idea of" under the principal word
"God."

In the COMPILER'S PREFACE to Prose Works, Albert Conant
writes again regarding sub-titles. He states,
"For example Man is often referred to as the "image
and likeness" of God. More than fifty references to this
subject will be found in the sub-title "and likeness"
under the principal title "image."

Therefore, we may safely surmise that our Leader's
definition as regards "you", is for the purposes of
instruction in Christian Science that which must
work up to the spiritual.

When we read Mary Baker Eddy's writings, we must
classify scientifically from what perspective she
is writing. Until it is intuitive and immediately
realized, it is helpful to ask oneself then, is she
writing from the mortal, the human, or the absolute,
that is to say the wholly spiritual perspective?
